Routing protocols can be split into to main types:
- Interior gateway protocols (IGPs) → used for routing within an organization
- Exterior gateway protocols (EGPs) → used for routing between organizations over the internet.
Note
The only EGP in used today is Border gateway protocol (BGP)
There are four main specific IGP protocols:
- Routing Information Protocol (RIP)
- Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP)
- Open Shortest Path First (OSPF)
- Intermediate System - Intermediate System (IS-IS)
The only EGP in use these days is Border gateway protocol (BGP)
