A Volume Group or VG is a pool of storage created by combining one or more Physical Volumes. To manage storage, initialised disks must be part of a volume group (note that this is different from marking the disk as being allocatable, which indicates whether data can be stored).
| Command | Description |
|---|---|
vgscan | Detect existing VGs |
vgcreate | Create new VG |
vgdisplay | View detailed information |
vgs | Display storage summary |
vgextend | Add additional PVs to a group |
vgchange | Change availability status of a group (such as deactivating) |
vgexport/vgimport | Move a volume group. Export will mark VG as inactive (and creates an invisible VG) that can then be imported |
vgremove | Delete a VG from the system, but only if no logical volumes are left |
